To provide a variety of construction, maintenance and repair services to roads, adjacent public property, and facilities for the safety and convenience of the public.


Receives direct supervision from the Public Works Superintendent and Public Works Supervisor. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and general public; maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when situations of conflict arise. Perform related duties as assigned.


This is a non-exempt full-time position.


Must be able to read and write English, ability to read, speak, and write Spanish is a plus.


Responsible for conducting general maintenance functions for roads and public works operations and maintains roads and right-of-way in good condition by blading or asphalt patching or paving such as:

·         Assists in flagging operations around work sites

·         Building retaining walls, maintaining fences and bridges

  • Collects necessary materials, tools, equipment required to maintain, clean, and repair road and drainage infrastructure and assist with water and wastewater infrastructure if needed

·         Construction projects and paving preparation

·         Gravel spreading

·         Maintaining roads in good condition for safe, hazard-free driving

·         Participate in maintenance and repairs of all equipment

·         Participates in the work of maintenance crews performing various construction and maintenance activities

  • Performs work assignments; follows all city and departmental regulations and safety requirements while operating equipment and performing work

·         Repairing and installing street signs, etc.

·         Safely operates light machinery and equipment


Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.


Will be required to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, should they arise.


Discusses plans, priorities and work schedules with the Public Works Superintendent or Public Works Supervisor, including the most useful equipment for certain jobs.


Responsible for assisting the Water Utilities Department if needed.


Participate in the on-call rotation for after hour, weekend, or holiday emergencies.


Other duties as assigned.





High school diploma or GED equivalent; or any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is a qualifying equivalent.  Minimum one (1) to three (3) years road and drainage infrastructure repair and maintenance. Must have experience and knowledge of standard operational procedures using light or medium duty road or right-of-way equipment and motorized and powered hand tools.


Must have effective verbal/written communication skills and a public service attitude with the ability to maintain a courteous and professional manner at all times.

Must be able to respond to work in emergency situations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, during all types of inclement weather, disasters within 30 minutes of notice to respond.

Must pass a medical examination and drug screening test as authorized by law and continually comply with the City’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Policy.


Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record. A Texas State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.


Must be, and stay, in excellent physical condition, with ability to handle physical demands of the position.
